Myths and Misconceptions About Menopause

There are many myths that surround menopause that are detrimental to women. These myths can cause women to fear entering menopause and cause problems with their relationships with their significant other. Here we look at the myths and the truths surrounding the change of life for women.

Myth: Menopause is a disease. Let’s throw the first myth right out the window immediately. Menopause is not a disease! It’s possible that this myth gets perpetuated by the way we talk about some of the occurrences during menopause as “symptoms.” Maybe that’s a mistake that we should start correcting. This is a normal stage of every woman’s development and reproductive life. And one of the ways women might help themselves not to feel like they’ve got a disease is to accept this stage as they accepted all the previous reproductive stages. If a woman embraces this new phase in her life and works with it, rather than fighting against it all the way, many of the changes that come with it can be handled more easily.

Myth: Menopause makes women emotional and even crazy. There’s no doubt that there can sometimes be mood swings because of hormonal fluctuations, and these can even be severe for some women. But doctors can help balance these mood swings, either by working with the woman to adjust her exercise and diet, or even with hormone replacement treatments. It’s another myth that those treatments are all bad. They can be used if necessary, in careful dosages with a doctor monitoring the results.

Myth: Menopause means that a woman is now old. The life expectancy of a woman has risen in the past decade or two. The average life expectancy of a woman in today’s world is 80 years of age. Due to the fact that women are living longer than ever before, a woman can expect to live many years beyond menopause (an estimated 1/3 of her life is still left to be lived). Plenty of postmenopausal women continue to be happy, healthy and full of energy and enthusiasm. Life does not end after menopause does.

Myth: Women lose their libido after menopause and are no longer desirable. The shift in hormone levels does affect a woman somewhat but many women crave intimacy every bit as much after menopause as they did before (and some more so!) Women continue to feel desirable and confident about their bodies after menopause has come and gone. Some menopausal women will experience dryness and slight discomfort, but for many women, no longer having to worry about periods or contraception can make their intimate relationships even more fulfilling.

Do you think you might be experiencing early menopause? If so, you need to know what the symptoms are and how to manage them. Visit the Menopause Symptoms site for the advice you need to help you through this stressful time of life.
