My Favorite Fairy Tales

Most of us have grown up with the classic fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm, Aesop etc. You may have read them yourselves or perhaps your mum or dad read them to you as bedside stories. Of course, nowadays, you could have also watched these stories in the movies or on TV. It would be a pity if these great tales were forgotten. They have been a part of life for so long and teach a lot about morals and so on. What are your favorites of all the fairy stories from whatever time? I’m going to reveal some of my particular favorites…

Rapunzel. When I was a kid, this was a great favorite of mine, possibly because I dreamed of having long hair like Rapunzel. This is a tale by the Brothers Grimm about a young girl called Rapunzel who is kept prisoner in a tower by an enchantress. In order to enter the tower the enchantress would have to ask Rapunzel to lower her long golden locks so that she could climb up. Of course, there was a handsome prince ready to rescue her. In order to stop Rapunzel escaping, the enchantress cut off her locks. Like every good fairy tale, it all ends happily.

The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg. This is a one of Aesop’s fables. It’s about a couple who owned a goose that laid golden eggs. I wish I had one of those! Stupidly, this couple aren’t content and, supposing the goose to be full of gold inside, killed it. They mistakenly thought they could collect all the gold at once! When they killed the goose and cut it open, they found that the goose was just like any other. There is definitely a strong moral to this story that greed can destroy something that was good and if you try and take too much too soon, you can destroy everything.

Goldilocks. Even though this is a sweet little story about a golden haired girl that enters the house of the three bears, it’s in fact a cautionary story. The three bears – mum, dad and baby – are all out. Goldilocks makes herself at home. When the bears come home they find Goldilocks asleep in baby bear’s bed. Goldilocks awakes with a shock and runs away as quick as possible. She never returns! Every parent’s nightmare is their child wandering off and getting hurt. So, this tale is bound to resonate strongly with parents.

Take a look at my Goldilocks costume site for some very pretty costumes.
