This summer you can easily pay a visit to Sanibel Island to revisit history as you relish the sunshine. The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village was voted the #3 attraction on the island by guests and it is unquestionably worth a visit. In accordance with this Sanibel Captiva Islander report, visitors describe this museum as a ‘step back in time’- an exceptional experience indeed for you to experience on your getaway.
About the Museum
The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village was developed in 1984 as a means of maintaining the history of this amazing vicinity. Seven historic buildings have been moved from their original spots to this lovely village and each restored to its original state here. You’ll find volunteers placed in the museum to explain the historic relevance of these buildings to tourists. Roughly 10,000 people show up each year to travel back in time at this historic village in Sanibel Island. The museum is an extremely inexpensive attraction that is equally captivating to children and adults. There is a reasonable entry fee of $5 charged for adults whereas children are allowed inside free of charge. You will locate the historic village and museum at 950 Dunlop Road.
The Buildings
The buildings here at the Sanibel Historic Museum and Village date back to the years between 1890 and 1940. These structures are all listed on the city’s Historical Register. Considerable reconstruction along with refurbishment projects on these buildings was completed by island volunteers calling themselves the ‘Hammerheads’. Each building, a historic landmark in itself, also holds unique exhibits and displays relating to the lifestyle of the pioneers who first made their homes here.
The Rutland House was the very first structure to be transferred to the Village. This ‘cracker’ style house was relocated here in 1984. The East Sanibel School for white kids, the Burnap Cottage, the old post office, Miss Charlotta’s Tea Room, the prefab residence Morning Glories and also the Bailey General Store are the most important historic landmarks in the museum. There are also some reproductions of the buildings that ordinarily existed during those times.
