what are good reads ( word wise ) for a Ist grader ?
My kid started reading with a lot of encouragement and cajoling ( she doesnt like reading that much but its a school requirement ) recently . i started her off with Margaret Hillert and she loved it and now is stuck to her books only . I need names of books with authors that i can make her read which will be a little more challenging than Margaret Hillert so i can make her progress to step 2 . ( otherwise she is smart and very good at math ) Any names ?
Magic Tree House series (easy); Magic School Bus Series (mixed); Cam Jansen mysteries (medium; there are also “Young Cam Jansen” books that are easier); Nate the Great mysteries (easy); Franny K Stein Books (easy); Captain Underpants Series (easy; you didn’t hear this suggestion from me, and definitely don’t get it without previewing it and deciding you can live with it, since it almost entirely consists of bathroom humor, but at least you won’t need to do any cajoling about it; first graders think it’s hilarious); Junie B. Jones series (easy); Ramona series (medium); American Girls books (medium); A-Z mysteries (medium); Flat Stanley books (medium); Fluffy the Guinea pig books (easy).
Ask at your library for more good suggestions. Also, don’t overlook good picture books. Your public library will have suggestions for those, too. There are hundreds of picture books that would be interesting and appropriately challenging for first graders.
