some sentences i don’t understand on the book, called Poor Richard’s Almanack?
1. “Never spare the Parson’s wine, nor the Baker’s pudding.”
why? Parson and Baker are gonna be mad on that? what’s the story?
2. “He has changed his one eyed horse for a blind one.”
that means he made a bad decision?
3. “After 3 days men grow weary, of a wench, a guest, & weather rainy.”
what’s that supposed to mean?
P.S. i’m not american. i think there were historical stories behind the sentence.
The language and the cultural references are about 250 years old. Much as I love Benjamin Franklin, some of the stuff in the Almanack can be a little obscure. But I’ll try.
1. A Parson is a religious cleric. This could be read two ways. It might mean “Use lots of the Parson’s wine and the Baker’s pudding” or it could mean “Make sure you give the Parson all the wine he wants, and the Baker all the pudding he wants”. But I don’t understand the joke. This probably made a lot more sense 250 years ago.
2. Yes, that’s a bad decision. He went from a bad situation to a worse one. Equivalent to: “We’ve jumped from the frying pan into the fire.”
3. It says that even something enjoyable, like a wench (a “loose woman”) or a guest can become tiresome after a few days. The word “wench” is antiquated and not really used any more.
