Clean Out The Garage And Clean Out The Consumer Soul

Let’s face it; we accumulate a ton of stuff in our lives, generally speaking. In a way, we’re like little ants scurrying about collecting things even when those things we have we thought we needed but we really only wanted. Needing and wanting are two different things, and learning how to go about letting go of stuff through garage sales can be an excellent way of remembering that.

For the most part, if people were honest they’d admit that most men in the family are the biggest offenders of amassing junk that can better be put to use by selling it off at a garage sale. Even though they once thought they were going to play that black electric guitar gathering dust in the basement the truth is they’re not, which makes it a good candidate for sale even if they cringe at the thought.

This is why many experts recommend that holding an occasional garage sale can be like chicken soup for the consumer soul. It’s a way of flushing out a bunch of unneeded stuff and freeing up a lot of space for other things that are probably much more needed and no less wanted. And making hubby stand over in the corner and help when it comes to selling off all that stuff might be enjoyable, too.

After all, it’s probably his fault that every one of the home storage shelves in the basement, the garage and in more than a few of the bedrooms that the kids used to live in prior to moving off to college are now stacked with more stuff than might be found in the fabled cave of the 40 thieves of Ali Baba fame. Making him do penance by cleaning out that cave can be a good thing for most any wife.

Still, it probably isn’t necessary to go through the house with in a clean sweep and put stuff on sale that’s still needed and used a regular basis. For example, maybe the family has gotten used to healthy meals made by something like a Cuisinart food processor. Getting rid of the old one before having a new one means the likelihood of just going back to unhealthy ways of eating will increase.

In truth, there are probably thousands of things around the home that belong at a garage sale but we always seem to find reasons to never let them go. Maybe it’s a tennis racket or a bowling ball that we once thought we were going to use when we took up the sport or it might be something else. Don’t be sentimental about those kinds of things when some money can be made from them.

There really are things in this life to get sentimental about, but make sure it’s things that are still needed and that have provided a measure of enjoyment or pleasure. Anything that’s got more than a 32nd of an inch of dust gathering on it probably should be sent to a sale. It just might be that holding one could be a good way to clean out the old consumer soul, and make a little money.

Carole King’s 11 songs for the Really Rosie TV special (it originally aired in 1975) came from characters found in Maurice Sendak’s books The Sign on Rosie’s Door and Nutshell Library, but it can easily be argued that the characters never really lived until given voice by King. Ostensibly the story of Rosie–a little girl from Avenue P, who, dontcha know, is a star just waiting to be discovere…
