How difficult is it to publish a childrens book?
I’m interested in writing a children’s book…I’ve never been serious about trying to be published or anything like that but I do know that it’s harder than it sounds. Where do I start if this is something I’d like to do?
It’s not easy, and in some ways it is harder than writing for the adult market.
You start by writing the book. Withour a manuscript, you don’t need an agent or a publisher.
The Purple Crayon (google for it) is an excellent site about publishing children’s books.
Traditional publishers purchase the right to publish, market, distribute, and sell your book. That means they pay you and do all the work, because they don’t make any money if the book doesn’t sell.
The chances of gettin a self published book into book stores is SLIM to NONE. The chances that the self publisher will drain your bank account, though, is very good. They make their money selling printing services to authors, not from book sales.
Always remember
1 – real publishers pay you, you do not pay them
2 – real agents get paid after they sell your work, not before
3 – being “available to order online” is not the same as havin books on shelves at real stores where most people still buy their books
