The rules were drastically changed in Civ 5. Two units of similar class cannot end a turn with also the same tile. There are two classes in Civ 5: non-combat units, which are great people, workers and settlers, and the combat units. To positive side is that many units possess a range attack capability that can let them attack the opponent’s units from two or three times the distance. Some of the units do not need a direct line of sight of the enemy in order to attack as long as there is also another unit who has sight of the enemy. In order to balance things out, you cannot put defense units behind the city walls. Only a single unit can be placed within the city as a garrison. The cities may become units with combat strengths and health bars. If the health bar becomes zero – the city is then captured. The cities normally begin with a health bar that is twice than that of a regular military unit. This heals them in every turn. The cities also get additional defense bonuses when they build certain buildings. This change in the game is good since this takes away the build defenders in the cities.
The stacking requirement is imposed at the end of the turn. This allows the units to pass one another yet not end at the same tile. You will be allowed to end the turn when this condition is assured. If you just finished a swordsman in your city that already has garrisoned one, and then all the tiles within the two-tile radius are occupied by your units, your only choice is to delete one of your units.
The Civ 5′s stacks if doom would eventually mutate into the walls of doom unless measures were taken. This would lead to players who are flooding the tiles with cannon fodder marching on the opponent’s cities forever. Aside from the unit cost for upkeep, you will also be limited to the strategic units the control. Although units whether weak or not aren’t constrained, you can only build a number of swordsmen when you only have one iron source.
