Swearing in ‘The Outsiders’?
I just read the Puffin Modern Classics edition of The Outsiders, and noticed that although there was plenty of reference to characters ‘cussing’ a lot there were no actual swear words in the book. Was the swearing edited out, or was that how Hinton wrote it originally?
Awesome book, either way. I actually quite liked the way the swearing was handled because the reader knows the characters are swearing, which is realistic given their age and circumstances, but the words themselves were left to the imagination, and also there was no need to put up with overuse of swear words, which while realistic would have been tedious after a while.
I believe that’s the way it was originally written. I read it and only noticed bad language a few times. And it probably wasn’t THAT bad by your standards.
